Most optical phenomena can be accounted for using the classical electromagnetic description of light. Complete electromagnetic descriptions of light are, however, often difficult to apply in practice. Practical optics is usually done using simplified models. The most common of these, geometric optics, treats light as a collection of rays that travel in straight lines and bend when they pass through or reflect from surfaces. Physical optics is a more comprehensive model of light, which includes wave effects such as diffraction and interference that cannot be accounted for in geometric optics. Historically, the ray-based model of light was developed first, followed by the wave model of light. Progress in electromagnetic theory in the 19th century led to the discovery that light waves were in fact electromagnetic radiation.

Active mode-locking of mid-infrared quantum cascade lasers with short gain recovery time. Yongrui Wang and Alexey Belyanin (2015), Optics Express http://dx.doi.org/10.1364/OE.23.004173
We investigate the dynamics of actively modulated mid-infrared quantum cascade lasers (QCLs) using space- and time-domain simulations of coupled density matrix and Maxwell equations with resonant tunneling current taken into account. We show that it is possible to achieve active mode locking and stable generation of picosecond pulses in high performance QCLs with a vertical laser transition and a short gain recovery time by bias modulation of a short section o

Germanium Optical Material
Del Mar Photonics manufactures precision Germanium optical components, which are widely used for infrared applications. Its useful transmission range is from 1.8 micron to 17 micron. Due to wide transmission range and opaque in visible Ge is well suited for manufacturing of optical components for IR applications in lasers and optical systems. Its high index of refraction (greater than 4) makes it of particular interest for lens design.
Germanium components are used with AR coatings because of high surface reflectivity of substrate.
Germanium blocks UV and visible light as well as the infrared up to about 2µm. Its high index is desirable for the design of lenses.
Germanium (Ge) infrared optical materials for the manufacture of quality thermal imaging systems.
Diamond-like carbon coatings (DLC)
Being applied to Germanium or Silicon windows and lenses DLC provides BBAR performance coupled with excellent protection of outer optical surfaces from negative influences of the environment (humidity, dust, atmospheric precipitations) and stays inert to mechanical strikes, thermal shock, acids, salts, solvents and other chemical reagents. It consists of carbon and hydrogen. Field of application is military devices and outside thermal cameras. Sometimes it's better to have window and lenses coated DLC+BBAR. DLC coatings can be applied to Ge and Si substrates of sizes as big as 320mm in diameter.

We show that it is possible to achieve active mode locking and stable generation of picosecond pulses in high performance QCLs with a vertical laser transition and a short gain recovery time by bias modulation of a short section of a monolithic Fabry-Perot cavity. In fact, active mode locking in QCLs with a short gain recovery time turns out to be more robust to the variation of parameters as compared to previously studied lasers with a long gain recovery time. We investigate the effects of spatial hole burning and phase locking on the laser output.

Typical large caliber muzzle flash last less than 0.2 seconds in the MW (3μm to 5μm) band. This fact leads to the most important technological challenge when it comes to the detection and characterization of short, millisecond long events: high frame rate.
Telops was present on the test range of a military facility for the demonstration of the FAST-IR 1500 infrared camera from Telops. This application note presents the preliminary analysis of the measurements performed after the firing of ordnances from the barrel of a tank. The demonstration was developed around the application of artillery muzzle flash analysis.

Atypical prefrontal cortical responses to joint/non-joint attention in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD): A functional near-infrared spectroscopy study. Huilin Zhu et al (2015), Biomedical Optics Express http://dx.doi.org/10.1364/BOE.6.000690
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neuro-developmental disorder, characterized by impairments in one’s capacity for joint attention. In this study, functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) was applied to study the differences in activation and functional connectivity in the prefrontal cortex between children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and typically developing (TD) children. 21 ASD and 20 TD children were recruited to perform joint and non-joint attention tasks. Compared with TD children, children with ASD showed reduced activation and atypical functional connectivity pattern in the prefrontal cortex during joint attention. The atypical development of left prefrontal cortex might play an important role in social cognition defects of children with ASD.

What is Optics?
A documentary report all about Optics for homework/assignment.
Optics is the branch of physics which involves the behaviour and properties of light, including its interactions with matter and the construction of instruments that use or detect it. Optics usually describes the behaviour of visible, ultraviolet, and infrared light. Because light is an electromagnetic wave, other forms of electromagnetic radiation such as X-rays, microwaves, and radio waves exhibit similar properties.

Executing A Repo With Four Pieces Of Collateral All At Once
I've been working with a friend of mine who has a strong background in military night optics. He is also a novice photographer among many other things and is getting me set up with portable infrared flood lights that can be deployed around a given address before I execute the repo so that when I approach the address the footage caught on the cameras will look like its late dust instead of pitch blackness as in this video. I will also have one that I wear and a couple mounted on the Repo Ninja. Should be showing them in use very soon. Again I apologize for all the black in this video but remember this is what I saw the whole time and it's what we get to work in all the time.

capture
Typical large caliber muzzle flash last less than 0.2 seconds in the MW (3μm to 5μm) band. This fact leads to the most important technological challenge when it comes to the detection and characterization of short, millisecond long events: high frame rate.
Telops was present on the test range of a military facility for the demonstration of the FAST-IR 1500 infrared camera from Telops. This application note presents the preliminary analysis of the measurements performed after the firing of ordnances from the barrel of a tank. The demonstration was developed around the application of artillery muzzle flash analysis.

Visible and invisible mirages: comparing inferior mirages in the visible and thermal infrared. Michael Vollmer et al (2015), Applied Optics http://dx.doi.org/10.1364/AO.54.000B76
Visible (VIS)-light and thermal infrared (IR) inferior mirages in the 8–14 μm waveband have been observed simultaneously for the takeoff and landing of various airplanes at distances of several kilometers. Similarities as well as differences between the VIS and IR mirages are discussed.
